Lamisil is the trade name for the medication Terbinafine hydrochloride. It is a medication that is considered an allylamine antifungal agent and is available in several forms depending on locale. Lamisil is indicated in the treatment of a specific set of fungal infections. It is most commonly used to treat the fungi that cause jock itch, athlete’s food, and ringworm.
The United States Food and Drug Administration approved Lamisil for use and it has been widely used ever since. It is available in both over the counter as well as stronger prescription forms. It is available as a powder, a cream, a spray, and in some cases doctors will prescribe a tablet form of the medication so that the fungal problem can be treated from the inside as well as from the outside.
Like all medication, either over the counter or prescription, Lamisil causes side effects that are not intended. These side effects are usually self limiting in those that do experience them. Some of those side effects may include, constipation, nausea, abdominal pain, headaches, dizziness, light headedness, raised liver enzymes, liver inflammation, liver failure, decreased white blood cell production, depression, anxiety, rash, hives, itching, jaundice, and fatigue among others. Speaking with a doctor about these side effects as they occur is important so that the doctor can help the patient determine if they should continue with the treatment or if another option should be considered.
